We Leverage Advanced Building Science for More Energy-Efficient, Comfortable Homes

High quality building comes down to science. It involves designing the right processes and using the latest technologies to optimize water, vapor, thermal, and air management so you can better control heat, air flow, and moisture for superior energy efficiency and durability. Researching breakthrough energy-saving products and techniques is our passion, and we incorporate them into every build.

At Shay Builders, we have always focused on combining old-school carpentry with specialty techniques and the finest products to build a premium home that stands the test of time. A trained carpenter since the age of 16, our founder, John Shay, has continuously sought out ways to construct the best homes possible - beautiful, durable, and environmentally responsible. His search has led to discovering the most effective building envelopes and developing innovative ways of incorporating them. Over the years, we have built a reputation for constructing super energy-efficient homes that last significantly longer than the typical built house - at only a fraction more than average building costs.

It All Starts from the Foundation Up

Our science-based enveloping begins with the home’s foundation. We have developed a unique pour technique that creates a cement lock, improving waterproofing and air tightness. This combined with other inventive cement and insulation methods enable us to build an ideal barrier to the elements.

Tight and Insulated

Any good advanced building method works from the outside in. We have perfected the art of eliminating thermal bridging with our wrapping and siding installation methods. As a result of our techniques, building materials dry more quickly while keeping the home ventilated and maintaining insulation value.

Temperature Control

We’re committed to reducing the overall energy needed to operate your home. To maximize energy-efficiency and optimize comfort we use the most advanced radiant heating, HVAC, and air exchanger systems. A super-insulated home needs to breathe, and these systems allow for that without the need to open windows. We have also developed a radiant heating installation process that equally heats the entire floor and can keep that floor warm for two to three days if you lose power.

The Attention to Detail that Make a Difference

For us, building a sound, energy-efficient home that lasts is all about using the right products and taking time to do some extra steps. For example, we use an interior/exterior trim product primed on both sides with a 50-year life span. All windows are sealed, caulked, sill taped, and pitched for water drainage; we allow for an air space behind siding to prolong the material’s life and paint job; and seal between rafters so no ice damming occurs.

By utilizing advanced building science, we construct homes that naturally lend themselves to optimal energy-efficiency.
